i would be interested in the next reunion-I worked on the 710 (as a shipfitter, 11-24527)when she was in the Boston Naval Shipyard for a FRAM job. I remember the dock side collision with a new DE in front of us during dock trials. I was working under the aft 5"38 mount at the time. I even met Arliegh Burke once. A long time ago. Great site! Sure brought back a lot of memories.

I was aboard the USS Gearing From Sept 1967 to April 1970. Had a great time made it to the Med twice andd stared in the movie The Distroyer Man, Was the one Playing The guitar On the fantail at the cookout in Canns France. Think you have a great web page and to keep up the good work. I visited the Combat Air Museum on Sunday, November 28, 1999. I found it interesting to note there was a USS Topeka (PF 35) from 4/2/1898-12/2/1929; a USS Topeka (CL 67) 12/23/44-6/18/49; a USS Topeka (CLG 8) 3/26/60-6/5/69; and currently a USS Topeka (SSN 754) commissioned 10/21/89 and apparently still active. If you have written your Senators about naming another ship after the Gearing family, you may want to write them again and provide them with this information.

I worked as a shipfitter (federal cival service)at the Boston Naval Shipyard and on the Gearing during her FRAM conversion. I rember her collision at flank speed and her knifing into the stern of a new 1000 class DE in front of her at dock side. Work was almost completed and I was working under the aft 5" mount at the time. The plant was lit off and preparations were being made for dock trials at the time. What a mess. I remember tugs could not separate the two ships and the stem of the Gearing had to be cut away to separate them. Since all the gangways had been pulled into the harbor between the ship and the dock, no one could get off until the Gearing was rushed into drydock 4 later that after noon. I believe a couple of sailors were injured by parting nylon hawsers up foward on the main deck during the event. I rember the Gearing's skipper comming around and checking to see if there were any injuries. He stated that something went wrong in one of the engine rooms and that was the cause for our violent manuvering while still tied at the dock. Quite a day for all aboard. Any body remember that incident? Would love to hear someone else's recolections.

I went back and reviewed the ship's log. Did not see any details about the collision at dockside as mentioned in my previous email. Could I be mistaken and my memory is failing with age? I sure would like to read the log concerning the incident.

I was a Canadian Sea Cadet who spent some time on the Uss Gearing in New London Conneticut. This ship was a great ship she cruised at 32 knots while on board this was a great experience for me at 15 years old as the experience is still clear in my mind today at forty-three
