I was one of the Reservist that was in on one of the 2 week rotations in 1971 in the MED. It was a great ship with a great crew!!! I was fresh off the farm - what a experience I will never forget.

My Daughter purchased at an auction a cruise box with John F. Maynard name and rank, CDR USN on the top. Sure would be nice to know if this box is the same one as the shipmate listed on this ship.

My father served in the first crew of the USS Gearing when it was commisinoed in 1945. I believe he was the chief in charge of Engine Room #2. He was proud of being selected for this ship. My mother has a letter from a shipmate that verifies this. I have no other documents or information. I am trying to recreate his service record. If you have suggestions or information such as rank and serial number, I would be grateful. Dad was discharged in November of 1945. He died January 1, 1999.

I am the son of Thomas Erwin Stanton S2c (45-46). My father had always spoken fondly of the Gearing, the comissioning ceremony, training exercises at Casco Bay,the Navy Day Celebration at New London, Ct, and the trip to the Caribbean. In 1994, my parents retired to Kure Beach, NC and enjoyed boating, fishing and walking on the beach. The picture of the USS Gearing always occupied a special spot in my father's study/workshop. One of his neighbors at Kure Beach had also served on the USS Gearing in the late 50s.

I had 4 uncles serve on the USS Gearing at the same time. James R. Frame, Raymond M.Frame, William H.Frame and Robert D Frame. James Richard Frame passed away October 28, 2004

My recently deceased farther-in-law, Louis Alvin Santens, served on this ship in and around 1947. I have pictures from the 8th reunion linked to the ship's 50th anniversary (1945-1995), but this is my first visit to your website.I am a native of Czechoslovakia and although it is the landlocked country , I am very proud of American soldiers, including U.S.Navy, to help to liberate Europe. (Actually, in 1945, General Patton made it to Pilsen town in the west part of Czechoslovakia, Europe, then was ordered to stop there due to future Russian sector demarcation line which was to start from there).
