I was aboard Gearing from July 1946 to March 1956. I really liked this ship and had many many great experiences.When I left the Gearing I was a BT1. Went to shore duty at Dam Neck, Va. and was advanced to BTC. Remained in the Navy until I finally retired in March of 1969.I like this web page very much. I have met many shipmates from Gearing and every time I go to a reunion I meet more of them. Shipmates, please come to our reunions if you can. We always have a great time.

I love looking back at times and places,were we served. It brought back so many memoies of the past. I have some super 8 movie film that is in very poor condistion . would some one like to restore parts .some of it has refuling and takeing on supplies. thank you for your time. I have been a member from 1988 but have not been to any funtion yet.

My father was a member of the Gearing crew. He was part of the crew who went on the (approximately) 1961 cruise. He was the ship's corpman. If there are any from that crew who remember my father, Leslie (Ace) Hewett, Jr., please feel free to contact me. Some of you may know that I have a four-book contract with Berkley Publishing Group - a division of Penguin Putnam. The first novel, THE SIXTH FLEET, is due for release June 12th. I was on USS Gearing (DD-710) as a TADer during its Med cruise in 1969. It was my first time at sea. I named one of the ships in the novel, a DD-21 class as USS Gearing. THE SIXTH FLEET, my first novel, is now at major book stores everywhere. I would like invite fellow Sailors who served on the USS GEARING to read it. I was TAD as a third class CTI aboard the USS GEARING in 1968-69 and never forgot it. In the first of four novels coming out from Penguin Putnam under their Berkley Publishing Group imprint (Paperback) I named a DD-21 class ship the USS GEARING and in the story the GEARING fights against overwhelming odds to destroy a multi-platform attack.
