My father served on the 710. Around 1953. He was a machinist mate 1st class. He always said some of the best times of his life were spent aboard the 710.

My Father, Carl Burgess Grimmett served aboard this ship in the early 60's. I know at least 1961 I was born then. He has told me many fond storys of this ship and her crew.

Finally got around to seeing if the Internet had any info on the Gearing. I submitted my name to the shipmates list. A number of my shipmates names appear on the site. I was RM2 when I left the Gearing in 1972, serving on her since 1969. If interested, I do have some Gearing pictures, taken during the 1969 and 1971 Med cruises. However they are in storage at the moment in the midst of moving to a new home. It will be several months before I can to them, let alone sort through all my pix to find them. Thanks for the web site.

My father served aboard the USS Gearing DD710 from 1951 to 1953 as a radarman, but I don't know his rank. He is now deceased, but the stories he told were facinating as a child. He always had a smile on his face when he talked about this ship.

I was a crew member 1958-1959 with a rating of ETNSN and then was transfered to the USS Manley DD940 while the Gearing was laid up for repairs after it was in a collision with the coal freighter SS MALDEN on or about July 10, 1959.

I was on the Richard E. Kraus DD-849 a Gearing Class Destroyer. She was stationed out of Newport, RI in the 60's when our ship was there.

I'm proud to have been able to serve along side CNO Admiral Vern Clark as a short term reservist in 1971 during his time as a Lieutenant aboard the Gearing. We entered the Navy about the same time-1968- looks like he decided to be a lifer.

The USS Gearing was the first ship I ever went to sea on. LTJG Price was the COMMO and LTJG Mike Shank was the DivOff of the CT detachment when I was aboard her as a CTI3 in summer 1969 in the Mediterranean. I am still on active duty. I hope I don't offend any of you, but I am also the only novelist on active duty in the United States Navy and in my first book due out in June 2001 from Berkley Books - a division of Penguin Putnam - I have a DD-21 class destroyer named the USS Gearing in honor of the DD-710. Unfortunately, she gets sunk in the first book, but not before kicking ass and taking names. To all the shipmates on the USS Gearing DD-710, you have my greatest respects.
