Recently received the Gearing "newsletter". I was saddened to read of the passing of Wally Yates. We served together in the pipe shop for a couple of years and spent liberty time together. Lots of fun. He was an interesting man, inasmuch as he wore with pride a Combat Infantryman's badge, earned while he served in the army during the Korean conflict. My sympathy to the Yates family.. phillip bruno

The things I remember about the Gearing. Leaving Boston for Gitmo for Shackdown cruise after Fram One conversion. Pulling into Mayport Florida, a Master Chief was retireing and leaving the ship there but was stopped at the gate and recalled because we had to get underway for Cuban Blocade. The next thing was working on deck and hearing that President Kennedy was shop. Then after several Med cruises going all the way up the St Lawerence Sea Way to Montreal and then to New York City for the 1964 Worlds Fair. The Gearing stands CLEAR and PROUD in my mind.

like to hear from those in the time frame. t.w. lyons was the best. i remember the med-cruise when the 1mc announced the birth of his 9th child and all of the crew congradulated him for having a baseball team.

I was aboard during the collision coming in to port. I just came on watch in after engine room for the 4 to 8 watch. Charlie Boyle was on watch in forward engine room. Not being complety awake that time of morning, I can assure we all were awake real fast.
