With the Covid 19 crisis continuing to play out, seniors our age continue to be told to shelter-in-place, both nationally and in the state of MI. We have been in communication with Jack Cole, the 2020 reunion host. Jack indicated the outlook for holding the reunion June 11-14 is not good. Sadly, we determined the time has come to cancel the 2020 reunion. And, postponing the reunion to the fall is not an option. Given Michigan continues to be a hotspot and our being in the high-risk category for Covid 19, we feel this is prudent for all concerned.
For those who have already sent your registration and payment for the 2020 USS Gearing reunion to Dan Donohue, our treasurer, he said he would simply shred those checks. Hence, you need to record that check number as void in your records. Should you have made your hotel reservation, also, you should cancel that reservation at this time.
Since there will be no board of directors meeting this year, two officers and two board members that are scheduled to rotate off the board of directors this year, after three years of service, still needs to be addressed by the board for the coming year. They are: Bill Latta, Ken Baker, Jack Cole and Frank Goetschius. Bob Witkowski, our secretary, will be sending out an email early next week to elected members of the board to approve these four men to continue to serve an additional year-provided they are willing-until this can be properly addressed at our board of directors meeting next year.
On behalf of the USS Gearing (DD-710) Association and our members, we want to thank Jack Cole (QM2, 1970-72) for all the hard work he has already done in planning and arranging the 2020 USS Gearing reunion. Unfortunately, all his good work has been undone by this unprecedented health crisis. Nevertheless, kudos to you Jack, for all you have done.
The 2021 USS Gearing (DD-710) Association reunion, hosted by Bobby Harris (BT1, 1965-69), will be held June 13-17, 2021 in Warwick/Newport, RI next year. So, mark your calendar; we look forward to seeing all of you next year.
